Conditional Mood

Master the Polish conditional mood by learning to add the '-by' particle to past tense verbs, essential for expressing politeness, wishes, and hypothetical scenarios.

Learning goals

  • Understand the construction of the Polish conditional mood.
  • Learn to express politeness, hypotheticals, wishes, and advice.
  • Master the "mobile particle" rule and proper placement of conditional endings.
  • Understand the distinction between "If" (Gdyby) clauses and standard verb conjugation.

Grammar rules

In Polish, the conditional mood is not created with helper words (like "would" or "should"). Instead, it is formed by attaching a particle and a personal ending to the past tense form of the verb.

The Formula

3rd Person Past Tense Form + by + Personal Ending

Personal Endings

These endings attach to the particle -by:

PersonSingular EndingPlural Ending
Ja (I)-bym-byśmy
Ty (You)-byś-byście
On/Ona/Ono-by-by
Oni/One-by-by

Declension / Conjugation patterns

To form the conditional, take the 3rd person past tense form of the verb and attach the ending. Note that the 3rd person past tense form changes based on gender and number.

Example: Chcieć (to want)

PersonMasculineFeminine
JaChciałbymChciałabym
TyChciałbyśChciałabyś
On/Ona/OnoChciałbyChciałaby
MyChcielibyśmyChciałybyśmy
WyChcielibyścieChciałybyście
Oni/OneChcielibyChciałyby

Examples

PolishEnglishNotes
Chciałabym zamówić kawę.I would like to order a coffee.Used for politeness (female speaker).
Gdybym miał czas, poszedłbym do kina.If I had time, I would go to the cinema.Conditional sentence structure.
Na twoim miejscu nie robiłbym tego.In your place, I wouldn't do that.Giving advice (masculine speaker).
Powinieneś to zobaczyć.You should see this.Using 'Powinien' for obligation.

The "Floating Particle" Rule

The particle (-bym, -byś, -by) is mobile. While typically attached to the verb, it can move to the first stressed word in the clause for emphasis or stylistic flow.

  • Attached (Standard): Zrobiłbym to. (I would do it.)
  • Detached (Emphatic): To bym zrobił. (I would do it.)

Common mistakes

Watch out

Avoid the "Double By" mistake. Learners often add the conditional particle to both the Gdyby (if) and the main verb. In an "If" clause, the particle only attaches to Gdyby.

  • Wrong: Gdybym ja bym miał czas...
  • Right: Gdybym miał czas...
  1. Stress Placement: The particle is enclitic (unstressed). The stress remains on the original syllable of the verb (e.g., RO-bił-bym, not ro-bił-BYM).
  2. Gender Agreement: Because the conditional is built on the Past Tense, you must match the verb's gender to the speaker (a man says Zrobiłbym, a woman says Zrobiłabym).
  3. Would vs. Will: Do not confuse the Future Tense (Będę robił - I will be doing) with the Conditional (Robiłbym - I would be doing). Use context and the presence of "If" to identify the Conditional.

Quick recap

  • Formation: 3rd person past + by + personal ending.
  • Usage: Politeness, hypotheticals, advice, and wishes.
  • Gdyby: Use Gdyby + ending for "If" clauses.
  • Powinien: Use this adjective-like verb combined with conditional endings for "should."
  • Aspects: Imperfective conditional focuses on habits/processes; Perfective conditional focuses on a single, specific event.
  • Flexibility: The conditional particle is mobile and can move to the first stressed word in the sentence.
