Question Words and Questions

Master the structure of Polish questions, ranging from simple Yes/No inquiries using 'Czy' to complex interrogative pronouns that change based on grammatical cases.

Learning goals

  • Understand the formation of Yes/No questions using the particle Czy.
  • Differentiate between invariable question words and variable pronouns.
  • Correctly use case-dependent question words like Kto and Co.
  • Master the nuance between Jaki vs. Który and Dlaczego vs. Po co.

Grammar rules

Yes/No Questions (Pytania rozstrzygające)

Polish does not use auxiliary verbs (like "do/does") for questions.

  • The Particle: Place the word Czy at the start of a declarative sentence.
  • Intonation: In spoken Polish, you may omit Czy and rely entirely on rising intonation at the end of the sentence to indicate a question.

Question Words (Zaimki Pytające)

Question words are divided into two categories:

1. Invariable (Adverbs) These do not change form, regardless of the sentence structure.

  • Gdzie (Where)
  • Kiedy (When)
  • Dlaczego (Why - cause)
  • Jak (How)

2. Variable (Pronouns & Adjectives) These must agree with the noun they refer to or the case required by the verb.

  • Kto (Who): Changes by case (e.g., Kogo, Komu, Kim).
  • Co (What): Changes by case (e.g., Czego, Czym).
  • Jaki / Jaka / Jakie (What kind of): Changes by gender, number, and case.
  • Który / Która / Które (Which): Changes by gender, number, and case.
  • Ile (How much/many): Does not change itself, but triggers the Genitive case for the following noun.

Declension / Conjugation patterns

Variable question words decline like nouns or adjectives.

  • Kto (Who):

    • Nominative: Kto
    • Accusative/Genitive: Kogo (used with lubić, szukać)
    • Instrumental: Kim (used with z + instrumental, or być)
  • Co (What):

    • Nominative/Accusative: Co
    • Instrumental: Czym (used for transportation or tools)

Examples

PolishEnglishNotes
Czy lubisz pizzę?Do you like pizza?Basic Yes/No question with particle.
Lubisz pizzę?Do you like pizza?Same question, using only intonation.
Gdzie mieszkasz?Where do you live?Invariable word.
Z kim idziesz? With whom are you going?Kim is required by the preposition Z.
Jaka jest pogoda? What is the weather like?Jaka (feminine) agrees with pogoda.
Ile masz lat?How old are you?Ile requires the following noun in Genitive.
Watch out

The "Who" Trap: Learners often default to the Nominative Kto in all situations. You must match the case to the verb. If you ask "With whom are you going?", the preposition "with" (z) requires the Instrumental case, so you must use Kim, not Kto.

Common mistakes

  • Jaki vs. Który:
    • Use Jaki when asking for a description (What is it like? e.g., Jaki dom? - A big house).
    • Use Który when selecting from a specific set (Which one from the group? e.g., Który dom? - The one on the left).
  • Dlaczego vs. Po co:
    • Dlaczego asks for the cause (Why? Because...).
    • Po co asks for the purpose (What for? In order to...).
  • Ile + Genitive: After Ile, the noun must be in the Genitive case (e.g., Ile pączków not Ile pączki).

Quick recap

  • Use Czy for Yes/No questions, or use rising intonation.
  • Gdzie, Kiedy, Dlaczego, Jak are your "easy" invariable words.
  • Kto and Co change based on the verb's requirements (e.g., lubić triggers Accusative, z triggers Instrumental).
  • Jaki is for description; Który is for specific selection.
  • Always put the noun after Ile in the Genitive case.
